Applying For Canada Visa As A Skilled Worker

Foreign skilled professionals or workers have several options to consider. Foreign skilled workers who wish to settle in the province of Quebec must apply through the Quebec Skilled Worker Program, and qualified candidates are sent an Invitation to Apply. Also, candidates who wish to settle in a particular or territory in Canada can apply through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

The Following programs are designed for foreign skilled workers or professionals who wish to settle in Canada on a permanent basis.

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program: Foreigners with certain skills and work experience who intends to reside in Canada outside Quebec are encouraged to apply through this scheme.
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP): The PNP is an immigration program aimed at fast-tracking applications of qualified skilled foreign workers who have indicated an interest in settling in a particular province. Qualified candidates are issued Provincial Nomination Certificate, which allows candidates to immigrate to Canada more quickly.
  • Quebec Skilled Worker Program: This immigration scheme is designed for applicants who have expressed a desire to settle in the province of Quebec. Only qualified foreign candidates with the requisite skills and work experience are issued an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program is designed for skilled foreigners to immigrate to Canada on a permanent basis because of their skills and expertise.

Important Note: As of January 1, 2015 foreigners who wish to migrate to Canada as s Federal Skilled Worker must submit an application through the Express Entry System.

To be able to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker program, applicants must:

  • Have a valid job offer
  • Be eligible to work in Canada
  • Show proof of financial sufficiency to support yourself or your dependents upon your arrival to Canada
  • Have a requisite work experience
  • Meet the language proficiency
  • Have a diploma, post-secondary certificate and
  • Have intentions to live outside the Province of Quebec.

As An Applicant What Kind Of Work Experience Do You Need?

In order to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker program, your work experience must fall under the following National Occupational Classification (NOC)

  • Skill Type 0
  • Skill Type A
  • Skill Type B

As part of the requirements, your work experience must be full-time and paid, or the equivalent of part-time work experience.

Full-time work experience must include at least 30 hours per week, and the work experience must be during the last 10 years.

However, if you have a valid permanent job offer, these limits do not apply.

The Federal Skilled Worker Point System

To be eligible for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, applicants must garner at least 67 points. Points are allocated based on the following:

  • Your educational qualification
  • Your language proficiency in English or French language
  • Work Experience
  • Age
  • If you have a valid Canadian job offer
  • Adaptability

Note: The Federal Skilled Worker points are different from the Express Entry Points.

Applying For The Federal Skilled Worker Program

The first step is to undergo a free assessment to determine your eligibility.

After the assessment and you are qualified to apply under the FSW category, you must create a profile in the Express Entry System.

The Express Entry System is an online selection process for immigrants who will contribute to the economic growth of Canada through their various skills and expertise.
